Very old scottish border broadside ballad. A servant wins the love of a Lady, but he is eventually killed by her brother. Several versions exist originating from perhaps the XVI century. My take is inspired by the Saffron Summerfield version and uses a Huss & Dalton custom 00-SP and a synthetic viola in the background, out of a Korg PA-600.
The dowie dens o Yarrow
There was a lady lived in the north,
I ne'er could find her marrow
She was courted by nine gentlemen,
And a ploughboy lad frae Yarrow.
These nine sat drinking at their wine,
Sat drinking wine in Yarrow
And they made a vow amongs them all
For tae fecht for her on Yarrow.
So she's washed his face and she's combed his hair
Just like she's done before-o
And she's made him like a knight so bright

Three he slew an three they flew
An three he woundit sairly
Til her brither John came from behind
An he murdered him maist foully
